snow in boston!

December 30, 2012

two hours before myla’s birthday party, the first snowflakes started falling. by the time her party ended, and the guests were being picked up, we had about four inches of snow! {best birthday present for my girl ever!} then, by the next morning we had ten inches of fluffy, white goodness! one of the things we anticipated with moving to boston was to experience intense new-england-style-winters with a constant blanket of snow. so, we were slightly disappointed last year when we didn’t use a single snow day, and didn’t have hardly any snowfall the entire winter!

at bedtime, sela was outside:

a birthday party, for myla.

December 29, 2012

we had a little party for my myla, just her closest friends and family. myla is something special – she is not fond of too much attention, or anyone causing a fuss over her… she never asks for gifts at christmas or her birthday. which makes celebrating her all the more fun, because she’s so easy to please!

this girl is a creative soul who likes simple traditions. so i mixed a few of our family traditions with a few extra artsy details to plan her party.

to start, i hired a local caricature artist, mike horvath to draw portraits at her party. this was a lot of fun. the kids all loved it!

elf on the shelf :: 27 ideas

December 28, 2012

mr. bean made his second annual debut at our home this year. he was greeted each morning with squeals and smiles when our kiddos would find him in new spots. {my older kiddos rolling their eyes at me. it happens. they grow up.} sometimes he would surprise us bearing gifts and sometimes causing mischief. there’s something so fun about the power of imagination during the holidays, this little guy adds wonder and excitement to the entire month.

in pictures, twenty-seven elf on the shelf ideas:

christmas

December 27, 2012

we have this rule: no one is allowed down where santa delivered the goods until everyone is awake. everyone goes down together. this rule has never been broken.

so, here is sela and kj, obedient children as they are — standing at the top of the stairs trying to see as much as possible, and almost dying from the pain of waiting. waiting for their older sisters to wake up and get out of bed so they can go downstairs {insert: kiana moaning from her bed about how tired she is, each time sela sneaks in and tries to wake her up…}

christmas eve

December 27, 2012

sushi. holiday cards. good friends. good food. traditional christmas jammies. snuggles. cookies for santa. apples for the reindeer. movie: christmas vacation while playing crazy eights.

a new tradition: sitting around the tree sharing our favorite memories of 2012. my favorite memory: the moment we were all singing country songs driving around crescent lake in washington on this road trip. amazing: every one of my kids shared favorite memories that all had to do with spending time together as a family. no favorite toys. no favorite video games were mentioned. kj was almost in tears because he wanted to be back in cabo with his dear friends.

my heart was smiling.

cabo san lucas, part IV

December 26, 2012

{this is the last post for cabo san lucas…}

poolside in cabo

our last day{s} is always a little sad in cabo. we all mentally prepare to go home. do you do that on vacation? the last day or two, do your thoughts return to what-needs-to-be-done-at-home-or-work mode and you start to abandon the carefree spirit of vacation? cabo is so special to us, that none of us want it to end…

for some reason, we usually stay one to three+ days longer than our friends who go with us… so, the day they leave is a total downer.

KJ cheered himself up with three vanilla milkshakes after his buddies left…
