ode to halloween

i love my home.

i love weekends when hibernation seems to be the theme, keeping us in the walls of our home. where all we see is each other, and the closest thing to date night is the worn pair of yoga pants that fit me just so and whose black has been washed now to a soft dark gray. i live in these pants at home, wearing them out a bit more as i run around the house between children or activities.

but, what makes those stay-at-home days even better is when they are balanced with the ever chaotic see-saw of life… the one that throws us out there some weekends, hosting volleyball nights and friendly faces and storing all the good we get from them to hold us over during hibernation.

i mentioned here, that kiana returned home from the philippines to a birthday gift surprise…

she opened her bedroom door to find a new grey/black mixed shag area rug, new bedding, a new lamp shade, a new little owl, and a painting by yours dearly, me…

for this painting assignment, we had to create an analagous colors collage, with 4-6 colors.

my little collage is pictured on the left.

then we painted a larger version of the collage. i chose to make mine pretty big,

my second project in my oil painting class was to convey an emotion, a moment in your life, a feeling, a mental disorder… or anything similar to these in color. we could only use two out of three primary colors, and had the option of using white and black. also, it needed to be non-objective.

my project is finished. it’s been critiqued, and it’s on display in the entry of our home. i also planned it to be a part of my valentine’s decor~

what does my painting represent?

it mixes a couple of things…

first, balance.
i am always striving for balance in my life. I tried to somewhat balance my composition symmetrically on a diagonal to show this.

i am well-underway this semester with my new classes. i have oil painting, ceramics, a graphic design class, and a visiting-artist weekly lecture.
{love them all!}

my first project in my oil painting class was very time consuming. the whole point was to teach us to mix our paints, and more or less waste them. because this project took SO much paint. these paints are not cheap, people.

we were required to paint a color chart. It could be within a picture like mine is {not many people did this} or you could paint 96 popsicle sticks and line them up, make a checkerboard of 96 colors,

i heart polaroids

January 26, 2010

…when we upgraded sela from her crib/toddler bed,
we used our guest room furniture as her ‘new bedroom set.’

sincere apologies to our future guests.
no longer is there a room, just for you.

however, the good news, the old guest room is now…{drum roll please}
my very own art studio! i’m still in dis-belief. happy dance! happy dance!
i will no longer be painting/designing/artsy-in-general
amongst everyone eating dinner in the kitchen.
{big sigh of relief}

my ‘studio’ is not ready to be unveiled yet,

but the picture above is a sneak peak.
i currently have some of my favorite polaroids on display,

my girls’ rooms…

January 24, 2010

are so close to being done…but i’m going to post a few pictures now and then maybe again when they’re finished…

we have lived in our current home for over five years now. and until a few months ago, all the kids were still in the original rooms i placed them in. kiana being the oldest was given a room with her own bathroom. lucky girl. myla, for years has stated her complaint that she wanted kiana’s room. kiana was having nothing to do with trading, till a few months ago.

i don’t know what changed, but all of a sudden one night these two girls agreed to trading rooms. i spent DAYS making the change happen.
