barbie cake

October 5, 2011

* apologies for the poor picture quality, i took many of these photos in the wee hours of the morning, without any natural light. and, a few of them were taken on my iphone. i am by-no-means a cake decorator, simply a momma with a little girl who wanted a barbie cake, so hopefully this tutorial will help if you are in the same boat! readers, have you tried making a barbie cake? any advice?

** and, i have a large box full of the paper chains from sela’s lil party,

upcycled scooter.

May 27, 2011

we are a scooter-loving-family.

and, this spring kj has been cruising all-over the neighborhood on his sister myla’s hand-me-down razor scooter.

only problem: it’s pink.

each time i watched him cruise by on this barbie pink scooter, i would cringe.

mainly, because: he is not a pink-kind-of-guy. i bought him a pink shirt once, and he adamately refused to wear it. so, i’ve learned my lesson. this kid only wears “boy” colors. he won’t wear pink. purple. not even yellow! meaning: watching him ride this pink-licious scooter was killing me!

so, as we’ve been preparing for our yard sale, we decided we’d sell the pink scooter. and, even kj was ok with that decision regardless of how much he loved riding it!

diy: goodie bags

May 26, 2011
i will be doing this. because- isn’t this idea adorably brilliant and affordable!?!

if it wasn’t so late, and i wasn’t in the middle of packing… i would start making some right now!

and, think of all the possibilities…

recycled newspaper
wrapping paper
brown kraft paper

so many darling ways these could be done!

however. i would recommend putting the treats in plastic, or a zip-lock bags before the paper goodie bags.
for sanitary reasons.

has anyone ever made these? do you have pictures?

i’m thinking these could be cute for so many holidays & parties!

diy: napkin bows

May 3, 2011

while perusing pinterest, i spotted this darling napkin bow. so, for easter dinner i tried them out! miss thirteen was my assistant, and after we figured out one, she made the rest for me! {i love having older kids who help!}

instructions:

1. cut paper strips that are 8″ long, one-and-a-half inches wide. you can trim them shorter at the end, if you want a tighter center ring. fold the right side of the napkin in towards the center, leaving one inch of space.

2. continue by folding the left side in,

dear me.

April 30, 2011

my dear friend & sorority sister (aoe), katie, has had ‘the dear me project’ going on since 2009.

and since 2009, i’ve been thinking about what i’d write. after two years of thoughts fluttering around in my head, i finally wrote something – i’m not sure if i included everything i would say to my younger self, i think i could spend a lifetime thinking about & writing this – but, it’s a good draft. and, it’s genuine.

i also usually try to not focus on the past & what i’d want to change… i typically think, “yeah. if i had to do it all over again,

preparations for kj’s birthday party this week are underway…

our little man is going to be 8!

here’s some easy steps to create flag cupcake/cake/donut {whatever you want to top!} mini toppers + a pennant garland for the top of a cake. kj has requested texas cake and mini donuts for his birthday. i truly believe texas cake is america’s original chocolate cake. and we are fans.

to make the mini toothpick sized flags, fold cardstock in half and cut triangles. i created one i liked, then used it as a stencil to make sure they all turned out the same size…
