My Five Year Old Girl

Maria turned 5 on May 18th.  Incredible!   I can’t believe the girl that she has become. She makes us soooo proud.  Right now she is all about figuring out reading and writing.  She loves when we read her chapter books at night. Her favorite is Beezus and Ramona. She loves Charlie dearly, whether she admits it or not, he’s her bestest bud.    She is going to preschool 3 days/week and will continue through the summer.  She starts Kindergarten in September and will go all day, every day.  Something our district is switching to starting next year.  I have no hesitations about her being one of the younger ones in her class.  I completely feel like she is ready!

Maria is also quite the talker. In fact, if she isn’t around, we’re always surprised how much Charlie talks!  She has questions about everything.  Well that isn’t completely true, she has answers for a lot of things too.  Her own made up answers.  She asks a question and then responds with the “answer”.  Sometimes it drives my crazy, but other times it’s cute and other times her answers are down-right funny.

We started the birthday celebration at school on the 17th.  The next day, we all stayed home from work/daycare. I took the kids to the zoo. It was a warm day, so we took swimsuits to play in the sprinklers. We saw a lot of the animals up pretty close. One of the best days I have been there.  After the zoo, we came home so Charlie could nap.  Maria played on her new LeapPad.  Late afternoon, we headed to her friend party at a nearby Community Center.  I think all the kids had a great time!

Saturday morning, both kids were up early, but luckily both went down for naps before the party with the families.  We had an Olivia themed party.  Maria wore a red dress (Olivia’s favorite color) and I ordered a cake from Target that we put some Olivia characters on.  We had a pinata and the weather was beautiful so all the kids got to play outside.

It was a great weekend and we had so much fun celebrating!

Breakfast Club

I invited some book club friends over this morning for a play date.  The crowd was a little sparse, but we still had a good time. It sure is harder to find dates/times that work for everyone, even when kids are invited.  Wish I had thought to take pictures. It was a hectic day, as I am in call to do testing for work this weekend, and the schedule was behind, so last night’s testing needed to be done this morning, when I should have been making the egg muffins.  we did get to eat, it was all delicious! and a beautiful day for the kids to be outside!

Fun Playdate

Well I’m not sure what I was thinking when I organized a playdate for today, because last night when I thought about ALL the kids and people we’d have at our house, it seemed like a lot… but it was a BLAST!

In attendance – Ethan, Isaac, Lily, & Maria  -  all age 2!  Evan, Cole, & Macie (all >1!)  Oh, plus 5 Mom’s (Kristen, Theresa, Kyra, Jane, and me) and one soon Mom-to-be (Carrie)!

I dropped Maria off at daycare for about an hour this morning while I went to the dr and then got things ready. We had 2 pools in the backyard, plus the sprinkler! Everyone brought something to share for lunch (the brownies were a hit with the kids!) and we suffered no major meltdowns!  That is a success!

Maria LOVED it and after her nap (4-5 pm!) she asked about her “friends coming over?”   Sorry Sweetie, hopefully again soon!  And sooner than last time! Maria hadn’t seen any of these friends since she was 3 months old!  Here are a few shots, but more here at flickr. Unfortunately I was not at the top of my game and I didn’t get any shots of the babies or the Moms… just the toddlers.

Birthday Party

This afternoon we went to our friend Max’s first birthday!! It was a lot of fun! Luckily Max has a big basement, because the weather was not cooperating for the blow up bouncy castle his grandma got him.  It all worked out, the kids just jumped inside!

Once Maria got over the noisy air compressor she was all about jumping!  But she did stop for cake! Not sure who loved the cake  more, Maria or the birthday boy!

Bullets

You’re getting bullets… life just doesn’t seem that interesting to blog more than once a week, yet too much going on to write details… strange…

Friday

  • Maria’s 2-year wellness checkup. She’s 35.5″ tall and 27.8 lbs which puts her at about 90th percentile for height and 60th for weight.
  • Picked up a bike trailer that I found on Craigslist and stopped at a few garage sales.  Just bought a few toys for Maria, including a tea set which she seems to love!
  • I had lunch with a friend from my first “real” job after college. I hadn’t seen her in about 8 or 9 years so it was fun to catch up.
  • Ran some more errands.
  • Picked up Maria, and then as soon as Chad got home, headed out to meet my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and niece Jana for pedicures!
  • Overall, fun relaxing day!

Saturday

  • Met Jana and Kim at Jana’s soccer practice and then picked up McDonald’s and headed to Teddy Bear park to play.
  • During Maria’s afternoon nap, I got the bikes down and pushed them to the gas station to get air in the tires.
  • After nap, we went for a bike ride with the new trailer! Maria loved it!!

Sunday

  • A college friend and his family stopped by on their way through town. We had lunch and hung out. It was the first time they met Maria, and they have a 9 1/2 month old girl as well, so very fun!

All in all, a very nice weekend!

Fun Day

Maria and I met Sarah and Lilah at Woodbury’s Central Park. It is a very nice building and a great indoor (inexpensive) way to spend an afternoon!

Maria loved the jumping the best at the indoor playground! I had to get another little girl to drag her out for me!

We had pictures in the morning, so Maria’s only nap was on the way home at 3:30! Yikes! Although she was very good this evening and went to bed an hour early without any fussing.

Maria’s favorite thing to say today was “going to be 2 on Monday” which is exactly right, but “on Monday” means “later” to her. Just like “tomorrow” and “in a little bit”.

It really was a Good Friday

Yesterday daycare was closed, so Maria and I met up with our friends Lisa and her daughters, Mallory & Mykaela.  We met at the zoo around 9:15. It was CRAZY busy! I’m sure because of the holiday and being the last weekend of the baby farm animals exhibit. Luckily I think we beat the busiest part.   Maria did not enjoy the wagon ride to the farm, but she did like the animals, and a lollipop appeased her for most of the wagon ride back.

After the zoo, we headed to McDonalds.  It was Maria’s first McDonald’s playland experience and she loved it!! She made a new friend named Lilah who was 6 who took her up through the tunnel and down the slide about 10 times. I think Maria slowed down most of the kids going through the tunnel, and I’m pretty sure she would have not been successful without Lilah. It was a great time!

Yesterday afternoon, I called a tree service about some trimming work we needed done to get an estimate.  They were already working in the neighborhood so I got a great estimate and they came back while we were running errands and were completely cleaned up and gone!  Felt good to get that done and over with… we tend to drag our feet when it comes to getting work done when we have no idea how much it will cost!

Maria and I also spent some time outside. She is pretty good following me around with her rake while I clean out leaves for 20 minutes at a time.  I’ll take it and we will be outside every afternoon we can!

Today we start our Easter festivities! Today with Chad’s family and tomorrow with mine. Hope you all have a Happy Easter!

Children’s Museum

Daycare was closed on Thursday, so Maria and I met Lilah and Sarah at the Children’s Museum. We spent most of our time in the Toddler room, so that Maria and Lilah could both roam.

Here are some pictures and a video of Maria going on the slide! She loved it and picked up her feet, so she just flew right down!
